Afternoon Break-Out Sessions

The afternoon break-out sessions give attendees the opportunity to learn about more specific topics on microfinance. Sessions are one hour long and will give you a chance to hear from industry experts in a smaller group setting. There will be four different break-out session, each lasting one-hour long. You will have the opportunity to choose from two of the four break-out sessions to attend in the afternoon. All sessions will be interactive with plenty of time for Q&A from the audience.

1. International Microfinance - Learn about the work of Grameen Foundation, VIA International, the Foundation For Women, and Women’s Empowerment International. These organizations each offer a unique contribution to international microfinance. Engage in interesting dialogue about some of the current issues and trends in microfinance around the globe. 2. Careers In Microfinance - This session is geared towards students or individuals interested in becoming more involved in the microfinance sector. Bring your resume and sit down for a personal review from a microfinance expert that can give you assistance on how to utilize your skill sets to help get into the microfinance industry. Participants will also learn about more ways to get involved in local microfinance by interning or volunteering. CLICK HERE to learn about the speakers.

3. Domestic Microfinance - Panelists from four local Microfinance Organizations will share about the work they are doing in San Diego, how they collaborate to work together, and some strategic partnerships they have formed. Panelists will represent The International Rescue Committee, ACCION San Diego, CDC Small Business Finance, and The Foundation For Women. This session will also highlight the work that Kiva is now doing to provide financing to local microfinance organizations in the U.S. CLICK HERE to learn about the speakers.

4. Microfinance & Holistic Development - Microfinance alone is not a solution to ending poverty. If microfinance is accompanied by access to healthcare, sustainable food & water systems, access to jobs, and the opportunity for education (along with many other factors) then it can be a powerful tool in making a difference in the lives of people and local communities. Hear from different organizations about how they incorporate microfinance into the broader scheme of the work that they do.
